We have been singing together since September 2003, originally under the leadership of local voice coach, Colleen Bleazard, supported by Angie Carney. When Colleen emigrated to Australia in May 2005 we took a ‘year out’ and the following year John Montgomery took over leadership of the choir. John stepped down from his leadership role in April 2009 but continues to bless us with his amazing voice as one of our favourite soloists!
In the summer of 2009 Andrew Hague joined us as Musical Director. He is also MD for Uplyme Church and leads their own gospel choir. Andy left SGC at the end of 2010 to form an R&B choir in the area in 2011 but is still involved with us as a workshop provider. We also invite voice coach Sandra Smith of Singing & Breathing to lead regular sessions for us.
Angie Carney now leads the choir, supported by Ann Garner, Kim Pritchard, Martin Staniforth and Susi Venn.
Past SGC band members have included Toby Williams, Nick Hannan and Scott Tobin. We are currently supported by the excellent Clive ‘Sam’ Salmon on keyboard. Sam is a past member of the celebrated soul band ‘Joey the Lips’ and, in his spare time, works as headteacher of a local primary school. He has recently been joined by Joe Musto on drums and Brad Baptist on guitar – we are enjoying singing with a band once again!
